Fo Guang University Applied Economics Department: Integrating Professional Courses with Self-Directed Learning
The Department of Applied Economics at Fo Guang University promotes the integration of professional courses with self-directed learning, encouraging students to deepen their knowledge through independent exploration beyond classroom instruction. Faculty members frequently invite alumni to share their experiences, providing practical insights on obtaining certifications and guiding juniors on how to maximize the university’s learning support and scholarship programs.
In the first half of 2024, economics students actively applied for and secured the highest learning subsidy allocation in the university, totaling approximately NT$940,000. This significant funding reduced the need for external part-time jobs, allowing students to focus on their studies and enhance their professional skills.
Bridging Theory and Practice
Dr. Chou Kuo-Wei, Chair of the Department of Applied Economics, highlighted the importance of financial certifications as a reflection of students’ professional competencies and as a critical first step into the finance industry. The department’s educational philosophy emphasizes a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application, offering students a robust platform to seamlessly transition from academia to the workplace.
A Self-Directed Learning Initiative
In line with the spirit of self-directed learning, first-year student Ma Fan-Yi and class advisor Lin Yen-Ju launched the "Financial Certification Self-Directed Learning Community" during the 2023 academic year. The initiative attracted participation from nearly 90% of their class. Leveraging the university’s subsidy resources, members independently planned study schedules, sought external guidance, and engaged in knowledge-sharing and collaboration. As a result, ten first-year students successfully obtained the "Financial Market Common Knowledge and Professional Ethics" certification, marking a significant step toward their future careers in finance.
The department’s focus on certification preparation is further evidenced by Ma Fan-Yi’s achievements. Enrolled through the university’s “Star Plan” recommendation system, Ma received a scholarship for certification-related books and has already earned the "Internal Control in Enterprises" certification and passed the JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test. His motivation for pursuing certifications stems from his goal to join the department’s financial industry internship program and his ambition to secure an international exchange opportunity before graduation.
Ma admitted that the certification preparation process was challenging but found the sense of accomplishment upon passing exams to be a powerful motivator. His commitment to continuous improvement in his professional field is evident. As he transitions to his sophomore year, Ma is set to become the department’s student association president. In collaboration with his peers, he plans to organize more learning activities and secure additional resources for self-directed learning. His proactive leadership reflects the department’s ethos of mutual learning and shared growth, providing peers with ample resources and learning pathways.
Comprehensive Support for Learning
Dr. Lai Tsung-Fu, Fo Guang University’s Dean of Academic Affairs, expressed his appreciation for the department’s dedication to supporting students in their academic and professional development. He emphasized the university’s diverse learning assistance programs, including certification incentives, self-directed learning community subsidies, and peer mentoring initiatives. These programs aim to enhance students’ practical skills and self-directed learning capabilities, embodying the university’s commitment to fostering well-rounded, career-ready graduates.
